COVID-19: Days 9, 10, and conclusion
Oct 15, 2020, 8:00 PM
Days 9 and 10 I generally felt pretty good. I was able to work from a desk instead of bed finally. I still had a bit of a cough and was occasionally hocking up phlegm, but nothing too bad.
I didn’t have COVID
Oct 15, 2020, 8:00 PM
During a local lull in the pandemic my wife and I attended an indoor event. People were kinda wearing masks and kinda social distancing, but a couple days after we got back I felt sick.
COVID-19: Day 7 & 8
Oct 12, 2020, 8:00 PM
I forgot to make an entry yesterday. I felt pretty much healthy other than extreme exhaustion. I grabbed my laptop and tried to work from bed but even talking to people on the phone was tiring. I took naps on and off throughout the day....
COVID-19: Day 6
Oct 10, 2020, 8:00 PM
I slept really well last night. Woke up feeling refreshed, not very congested, maybe a bit dehydrated. On my mom’s recommendation, I stacked a couple of pillows so that I could sleep slightly sitting up. Perhaps that helped.
COVID-19: Day 5
Oct 9, 2020, 8:00 PM
I didn’t sleep that well. I woke up in the middle of the night congested and parched. It took a while to fall back asleep, but I did eventually.
COVID-19: Day 4
Oct 8, 2020, 8:00 PM
My cough has been sloooowly getting worse throughout the day. It’s actually getting annoying now. I’m just starting to get congested but I can still breathe a bit through my nose.
COVID-19: Day 3
Oct 7, 2020, 8:00 PM
My cough is worse today. I’m still not really congested and my temperature is normal. I still feel a bit tired but at least my headache is better.
COVID-19: Day 2
Oct 6, 2020, 8:00 PM
This morning my throat felt worse. Very dry, kind of painful to swallow. Drinking lots of liquids helps. The headache and fatigue are about the same as yesterday.
COVID-19: Day 1
Oct 5, 2020, 8:00 PM
My wife and I were stupid and went to a large indoor gathering over the weekend. We wore masks… kinda, we tried to social distance… kinda. Now we both feel sick. We haven’t been tested for COVID-19 yet, so maybe this is just a regular cold...
COVID-19: Day 2
Oct 5, 2020, 8:00 PM
This morning my throat felt worse. Very dry, kind of painful to swallow. Drinking lots of liquids helps. The headache and fatigue are about the same as yesterday.
Re: Making Wrong Code Look Wrong

I just read this fascinating old blog post by Joel Spolsky from 2005, Making Wrong Code Look Wrong. But I find it fascinating for a completely different reason than you might expect.
Chesterton’s Fence
May 27, 2020, 8:00 PM
…let us say [there is] a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, “I don’t see the use of this; let us clear it away.” To which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well...
Mixing Swift and Objective‑C
Feb 25, 2020, 7:00 PM
I was responsible for migrating a very large Objective‑C app to Swift. To limit effort, we decided not to rewrite the entire thing in Swift (that would have taken years, probably). Instead we decided to do all new development in Swift, and...
My janky home theater setup
May 11, 2019, 8:00 PM
I’ve been iterating on our home theater setup for a few years now. Recently it feels like it has stabilized somewhat so I think it’s time to share my work with the world. I am curious what people think and especially if people know of a...

Leaving Facebook
Oct 16, 2018, 8:00 PM
After many years of barely using Facebook, I finally got around to pulling the plug on it. If I had done this a few years ago, I probably would have posted some lame “I don’t use this anymore!” message and that would be it. But now I...

Fixing btrfs
Dec 16, 2017, 7:00 PM
I’ve recently been getting weird crashes and slow behavior on my home server. I suspected that a disk failure was to blame and I was right. Luckily I’m running btrfs in RAID1 so nothing is lost. Here is how I went about discovering/fixing...
Programmer humor
Dec 3, 2017, 7:00 PM
I really like it when developers inject a bit of humor into their documentation. For example, from Apple’s guide for Objective-C:
